It’s that time of year again and the color gods have spoken… The Pantone Color of the Year 2016 has been announced. For the first time ever, there are two of them and they are both equally stunning: Rose Quartz & Serenity. Not only do these beauties stand incredibly on their own, they make a great pair for makeup looks, fashion and interior design too.

Pantone Color of the Year 2016

These colors were chosen based off of a balance between the warm rose, and the cool, tranquil blue. The Pantone Color Institute has seen more and more people embracing wellness and inner peace in their lives this past year, and the blending of these two colors represents those ideals coming together. I can’t help but see the connection between these two contrasting shades and the natural world!

The best way to interpret these hues? Through self-expression, of course. The beauty products above make great ways to introduce these colors into your routine. If you’re obsessing over the romantic look of Rose, try MAC Tined Lipglass in Dreamy for your pout or a rose gold shimmer for your eyes. If you want to keep the look feminine but bold, pair your pinks with a swipe of Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush in Soft Rose on your cheeks. As far as rocking Serenity on your lips, D&G has a near match, or you could always channel the blue on your lids with a periwinkle liner like this one by StilaNYX Glam Liner Aqua Lux in Pink is a hue that manages to channel both the cool + warm vibes.

While last year’s Marsala seemed like a decidedly autumn tone, these two shades work for all seasons. In winter, sporting a Rose Quartz and Serenity beauty look pairs well with cozy sweaters and coats in neutral colors. In the spring, the look pairs well with florals (no surprise there) and in the summer it will soften your brighter fashion pieces or add interest to white sundresses and loose, lightweight fabrics.

A lot of times you see these color of the year announcements without much advice for color pairings. But on the Pantone site they suggest a ton of other hues to complement the two 2016 colors – from calming pastels to rich earth tones. Therefore, I chose to add in a few alternatives for a mix and match makeover. Rose Quartz pairs well with earthy browns and greens like Smashbox Photo Op Eye Trio or a simple matte brown shadow, for example, and Serenity looks gorgeous with taupes like the one in ColourPop Mixed Tape‘s shadow. BareMinerals also has a palette, Posh Neutrals, that’s full of tones to pair them with.

Last but not least, if you don’t want to go all out quite yet, nails are where it’s at. Try Formula X Brilliants in Periwinkle Iridescent Glitter or essie Saltwater Happy to test the waters.

What’s YOUR verdict on this year’s choices?
